Wrinkles represent wisdom–but you still don’t really want them on your actual face. Here’s how to maintain a clear, smooth complexion for as long as possible. Spoiler alert: You’re going to want to drink a lot of water!

1. Butt Out

If you’re a cigarette smoker, you should seriously consider stopping. Not just for your health, but also because smoking causes hugely negative consequences on your skin. It dehydrates your skin,

2. Wear Your Sunscreen, Girl

If you don’t wear sunscreen, you’re missing out on the single biggest thing you can do every day to look younger. If we started to think of sun damage in another way–calling it literal radiation burns–then it’s really motivating to slather on the SPF. You should also wear a hat and loose-fitting, gauzy clothing to keep the sun off your skin when you go outside.

3. Try Retinol

Retinol is the cosmetic name for Vitamin A. It’s a common ingredient in anti-wrinkle creams because it helps battle the loss of collagen and elasticity in your skin as you get older.

4. Antioxidants Are Your Friend

Antioxidants can help you look younger–and stay healthier. The best sources of antioxidants are found in fruits and vegetables. Add more berries, cherries, spinach, and kale to your diet, along with nuts and beans. Yum!

5. Drink More Water

However much water you’re drinking, it’s probably not enough. Staying hydrated is so vital to your overall health. When it comes to your skin, hydration helps everything look plumper, younger, and more vibrant. Carry a reusable water bottle with you all the time so that you can always take a sip when you need it.

6. Add More Moisture

While the best hydration comes from within, moisturizer is important, too. Applying a quality moisturizer right after you wash your face can help hold on to the hydration in your skin. Use your fingertips to dab on the moisturizer and then gently massage it in. Be extra careful with the eye area–the skin there is very fragile, so tugging at it can create more wrinkles.

7. Catch Those Zzz’s

Getting enough sleep is so important to stay wrinkle-free. When you don’t get enough sleep, your cortisol levels spike. That’s the stress hormone that will cause you to have more wrinkles in the long run. You should also change your pillowcases regularly . As a bonus, consider a satin pillowcase–it’s good for your skin and for keeping your hair less tangled.
